Cohort 16: Health Mentors Program Continues to Grow Across BC
As we begin planning for Health Mentors Cohort 16, we reflect on another successful year of relationship-based learning across BC. Cohort 15 brought together 174 students from 11 health and human service programs and 48 Health Mentors who generously shared their time, experiences, and expertise throughout the academic year.
This year marked continued growth for the program. We welcomed 11 new mentors, hosted orientation sessions across four sites, and celebrated the accomplishments of mentors and students through in-person symposia in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George. These activities strengthened opportunities for students to engage with mentors in their own communities while building connections across disciplines and regions.
The program continues to receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from both mentors and students. Mentors described the opportunity to contribute to the education of future health professionals as rewarding and meaningful, while students consistently highlighted the value of learning directly from people with lived experience over an extended period of time. Together, these relationships remain at the heart of the Health Mentors Program and its ongoing success.
As we look ahead to Cohort 16, we are excited to continue strengthening the program across UBC’s distributed sites and expanding opportunities for students to learn from mentors within their own communities. We are particularly seeking Health Mentors from Victoria, Kelowna, and Prince George to support the growing number of students participating in these regions.
