UBC Health Patient & Community Advisory Committee (PAC) meets with VP Health
On June 16, Dr. Ananda, Vice-President Health, met with the UBC Health Patient & Community Advisory Committee (PAC) to get their input on her vision for a network of academic teaching centres to support team-based primary care in the province.
The vision includes a Provincial Centre for Innovation and UBC Vancouver Gateway clinic as a prototype for regional UBC Health Centres in Kelowna, Prince George, Victoria, and Surrey connected to a network of academic teaching clinics in rural and remote communities across the province. The goal is to increase access to team-based, prevention-focused primary care and clinical trials.
PAC members shared advice for engaging with rural and remote communities through community clinics, patient and community organizations, town halls, and community health days. They also discussed opportunities to partner with institutions that train health care technicians and allied health specialties.
PAC is a 12-member advisory group that provides patient perspectives and strategic advice to UBC Health on matters related to patient and community engagement. There are five meetings per year with one in-person meeting held annually, usually in June.
We are currently recruiting one new PAC member. A key focus over the next few years will be the establishment of the provincial network of UBC Health Centres and academic teaching clinics. Candidates must have prior advisory board, committee or group work experience and be able to provide input from the patient side of health care as either:
Individual patients – they can speak from their own experiences of health care;
Patient group members – are an active member of a patient group and know about the experiences and views of other patients like themselves;
Patient representatives or advocates – has general knowledge of the common interests of patients and can explain the ‘patient perspective’ on major issues; and/or
Community Activists/Advocates – can speak to a community experience, particularly a marginalized community (e.g., Indigenous, LGBTQ2S+, underserved, rural/remote, etc.)
