Workshops: Patient & Community Voices

On January 30th, we hosted our third Patient & Community Voices virtual workshop, Positive Reflections from Voices Unheard: Learning from Persons Living with HIV, which was thoughtfully facilitated by three long-time Health Mentors, John Dub, Al Hungerschafer, and Darren Lauscher. The event welcomed 21 students from a range of disciplines, including Audiology, Dietetics, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Speech-Language Pathology.
Throughout the session, students had the unique opportunity to engage in open, candid discussions with the facilitators. These interactions provided them with deeper insights into the lived experiences of individuals with HIV, the challenges faced within the community, and the personal journeys shared by the panelists.
Additionally, the students were introduced to community resources and learned how they can become more informed and empathetic advocates for persons living with HIV in their future practice. The workshop served as a powerful platform for fostering greater awareness and understanding while encouraging students to reflect on how they can contribute to more inclusive and supportive healthcare environments. One student said,
“I learned some tips for delivering life changing news and little things that can show compassion and help throughout the journey.”
We are deeply grateful to our community educators for their ongoing partnership and continued support in our workshops.
