Conference: International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM)

A team from PCPE attended the ICAM conference April 3-7 in Halifax. It is an annual conference of the Association of Faculties of Medicine in Canada (AFMC).
Health Mentor, Karen Firus, presented her group’s symposium poster titled, “A BRIEF on INVISIBLE illness…there’s more UNDERNEATH”, demonstrating how arts-based interactive tools can be used for teaching and learning about collaborative patient-centred care. Angela and Cathy presented posters on national and international collaborations promoting patient involvement in health professional education.
Angela, Bill, Cathy and Karen also put on a workshop with Benoit-Pierre Stock and Annie Descoteaux from the University of Montreal Centre of Excellence for Partnership with Patients and the Public on supporting diversity in patient partnerships.
A highlight at the conference was the opening keynote address featuring Health Mentor, Angus Pratt, who was interviewed by Globe & Mail, Health Reporter, Andre Picard. During the interview they discussed how UBC’s Health Mentors program helps students learn what it means to be a good doctor from the patient’s perspective.
The conference was attended by over 1,500 delegates from across Canada and beyond. ICAM 2026 is in Ottawa. Stay tuned!
