Annual Symposia: Learning from Health Mentors in-person and virtually

In-person Health Mentors Program
The UBC Interprofessional Health Mentors Program (HMP) held its 13th Annual Health Mentors Symposium on April 8, 2024. The Symposium is the highlight of the yearlong UBC Health Mentors Program, a unique experiential activity in which interdisciplinary teams of healthcare students learn together from a mentor who has a chronic condition.

The Health Mentors program is a powerful example of community-based transformative learning. Forty-one Health Mentors and 145 students from eleven different programs participated in the event including Audiology, Dentistry, Dietetics, Genetic Counselling, Kinesiology, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology. During the Symposium the teams shared their learnings with other UBC students, faculty, and the community through creative and colorful posterboard presentations.

Virtual Health Mentors Program
On April 10, 2024 the UBC Occupational Therapy and Medicine students held their Virtual Symposium to showcase lessons learned from the online Health Mentors Program, the Patient and Community Voices (PCV) workshop series, and the Living Library Patient educator program. Groups presented slide shows, key messages, and patient educator videos showcasing patient stories and person-centered care. The Symposium was attended by OT students, UBC Health Mentors, UBC Faculty, and PCPE staff.

Congratulations to our 2024 students! We wish you all the best in your professional careers!
