Living Library: New Videos and Facilitator Guide Available

We have added three new videos to the Living Library, bringing the number of videos about patient voices to 23. Our latest videos highlight the experiences of three of our Health Mentors: Paul, Darren, and Karen.

These vignettes highlight each person’s unique story, and illustrate key topics in health care. Paul’s “Advice for Healthcare Providers” gives tips for healthcare providers on how to treat and interact with patients as people first. In Darren’s “And then You Get a Diagnosis that Changes your World”, he describes how diagnoses can alter one’s perspective on life, and the importance of being able to “[craft] your own story” in light of it. In Karen’s “Journey to Acceptance”, she narrates her personal experiences on the theme of acceptance: among peers, of her disability, and with her identity. We thank them for sharing their personal stories and insights with us.

We have also introduced a new facilitator guide with thought-provoking questions that will allow viewers to reflect, and discuss the topics in the Living Library. We invite students and faculty to try it out and give us some feedback.

The video collection is part of coursework for 400 students in audiology, medicine, pharmacy, and psychology at UBC, and in health profession programs at the British Columbia Institute for Technology. UBC faculty and students can access the library with their campus-wide login (CWL) on Canvas, UBC’s learning management system.

New videos are continuously being developed. Stay tuned!
