Kerston Award: Celebrating 10 years of outstanding community educators!

On June 24th, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Kerston Community Educator Award at the annual UBC Health Awards reception. The Kerston award is named after long-time community educator R. Paul Kerston. It was established to honour outstanding community educators who have expanded student learning beyond traditional professional boundaries and made a difference to student learning in health and human service programs at UBC.

The award has been given to 18 individuals and one organization since it was established in 2014. We were delighted to have 10 of the 19 recipients and Paul Kerston join us to celebrate the anniversary.

Angela Towle and Bill Godolphin, who were instrumental in establishing the award, were unable to attend and Cathy Kline presented on their behalf.

“It is most fitting that the first recipients of the Kerston award were two trailblazing women, Mo Korchinski and Tiare Laporte, and on this 10th anniversary we added the names of two more formidable women to the list,” said Cathy when she presented the award to this year’s recipients – Eve Sheftel and Karen Firus.

Congratulations everyone! Stay tuned for the next call for nominations this Fall.
