We are pleased to announce that Mandy Young, a long-time Health Mentor, workshop facilitator and UBC Health Patient & Community Advisory Committee member, has joined our team at PCPE! The community engagement coordinator position was part of a fundraising campaign to expand our community outreach and connect with diverse patient communities across British Columbia.
Mandy is a parent of a medically and behaviourally complex child and has six years of experience working in the non-profit peer support sector.
“When I first saw how rewarding it was to be a health mentor with PCPE, I knew I wanted to be more involved, give back to my community and help shape the minds of UBC students. I never imagined it would result in such meaningful work 10 years later!” says Mandy of her new appointment with PCPE.
Mandy is also a recipient of the R. Paul Kerston Community Educator Award for expanding student learning beyond traditional boundaries and making a difference to student learning at UBC. Mandy brings her passion, dedication and advocacy experience to her role as community engagement coordinator.
In this new role, Mandy will strengthen community relationships and build supports for patient and community members engaging with UBC Healthactivities, especially in the core area of collaborative health education. Her work will advance UBC Health’s mandate to graduate learners who understand the diverse perspectives and experiences of patients and communities.
“To come into a place like PCPE that has made a commitment to expanding what education means and looks like, understanding that there are different ways to learn, is important work,” says Mandy.
Mandy will be reaching out to community organizations in the coming months. If you would like to connect with Mandy to learn how you can become involved at UBC please email mandy.young@ubc.ca. |
